World champion Ouyang Xiaofang of China finished her tour in Doha with a knee
injury, winning a silver medal in the women's 63kg weightlifting here on Monday.
The 23-year-old Ouyang, one of the gold medal favorites, injured her left
knee when lifting 137kg and quit the competition with a total of 247kg.
"Her knee can not bend now, and we are going to take her to a local hospital
for further examination," said Ma Wenhui, Ouyang's coach.
"She strained her knee and at least need one month to recover," Ma added.
"We planned to reduce the weight to 135kg, 30 seconds before the ending time
for her lift, which is allowed by the weightlifting regulation. One referee
refused to change and the timing clock didn't stop, so we have to let Ouyang
step onto the platform to lift 137kg," Ma said.
"She lifted with a hurry because of the time limit, and that cause her
injury."
"Though we lost in the 63kg, we will not give up this category in the Beijing
Olympics," said Ma Wenguang, president of the Chinese Weightlifting Association.
"I am not afraid of China lost in the 63kg category, but I am worried about
Ouyang's injury," he added.
