Olympic champion Pawina Thongsuk won the second gold medal for Thailand in the 15th Asian Games as she overcame the injured Ouyang Xiaofang of China in the women's 63kg weightlifting here on Monday.

Thongsuk, gold medallist in the women's 75kg in Athens, lifted a winning total of 252kg, breaking the world record of the jerk at142kg, one kilogram more than the previous mark.

Ouyang, world champion in the 2006 worlds, took the silver at 247kg, while Faw Thaw Yae of Myanmar, 20, settled for the bronze at 227kg.

In the snatch, Ouyang and Thongsuk entered the competition after all five of the other lifters had completed their three attempts.

Thongsuk had a controlled lift at 110kg in her second attempt before Ouyang failed to raise 115kg in her third attempt.

Nevertheless, Thongsuk, whose bodyweight was lighter than Ouyang, failed to lift 115kg in her third while Ouyang worked hard to control the same weight.

Both Thongsuk and Ouyang jerked 132kg in their first attempts, but Ouyang strained her right knee when trying to hoist 137kg in the second lift.

Thongsuk had a good lift at 137kg before Ouyang announced to quit the competition due to the injury. Holding the gold medal in her hand, Thongsuk raised 142kg successfully in her last attempt, breaking the world record of 141kg set by Svetlana Shimkova of Russia.

"Even if Ouyang had not injured her knee, I would have won the gold medal anyway. I am a fighter," said Thongsuk.

"I am not afraid of China lost in the 63kg category, but I am worried about Ouyang's injury," said Ma Wenguang, president of the Chinese Weightlifting Association.
