China crushed Oman 6-1 in a fiery encounter to unveil their men's hockey
competition at Doha Asiad with Chinese captain Song Yi blasting in four goals on
Monday.
Oman started the game aggressively and committed several fouls in the opening
minutes. Oman defender Shahab Rabeea Al Noobi pulled Song Yi to the ground in
the fourth minute as he ran through on goal. Umpire Kondo had no choice but to
award the first penalty stroke of the game.
Song stepped up and converted the penalty stroke to give China a 1-0 lead.
In the 10th minute, from a penalty corner, Song drag-flicked the ball to the
bottom right corner of the goal beyond the outstretched legs of Oman's
goalkeeper Dawood Asim Siddiq to give China a comfortable 2-0 lead.
In the 25th minute, Song scored a brilliant goal when he drag-flicked the
ball to the top left corner of the net from another penalty corner. The feat
marked the fastest hockey hat-trick of the Games so far in just 25 minutes.
Three goals adrift, Oman didn't give up. Two minutes before the interval
Chinese substitute Ye Peng was shown the first yellow card of the Games and
China had to play the remainder of the first half with 10 men.
Five minute after the restart, Al Noobi was shown the yellow card after a
high tackle on a Chinese player.
Song continued his scoring in the 45th minute when Jiang Xishang dribbled
past two Omani players to set him up for his and China's fourth score of the
game.
Oman's hard work finally got paid in the 50th minute when Samir Haliyas Al
Shibli's reverse stick shot beat Chinese goalkeeper Su Rifeng on his near post
to pull the score to 4-1. But China found a new goal scorer Yu Yang to make it
5-1 three minutes later.
Omani goalkeeper Siddiq had to make a few brilliant saves to keep the score
down, but Omani coach Mohy Zaghloul had to replace him in the 64th minute as he
was injured.
In the 67th minute, Na Yubo's shot beat substitute goalkeeper Shabr Abdul
Rahim Ismail to give China a 6-1 win in the opening match.
China will now face India in the next match on Tuesday in a must-win game for
both sides.
