Rafd Zyad Almasri claimed the first swimming gold for Syria in this Asian Games in Doha on Monday when he won in the men's 50m freestyle.

Almasri, 24, clocked a time of 22.41 to triumph while Japanese Makoto Ito was second in 22.77.

Cai Li from China took bronze in 22.95.

Defending champion Ravil Nachaev from Uzbekistan finished fifth in 23.27.
