China continued their ascendancy in beach volleyball event as its two men
pairings both stormed straight-set victories over opponents Monday in Doha,
following its women teams double win on Sunday.
Top Chinese seeds Wu Penggen and Xu Linyin got off to a solid start with
21-11, 21-14 win against Al Farsi Ibrahim and Al Maqbali Yaqoob of Oman.
"China is not an easy team to play, especially considering they are ranked
sixth in the world and they have finished third in a world tour event," said
Yaqoob Al Maqbali. "We gave everything we had, but unfortunately, we lost."
Wu Penggen and Xu Linyin will take on Indonesia's Ardiyansah Andy and
Darkuncoro Koko Praetyo in the next round. The latter downed Al Jamani Saeed and
Benlouaer Ziad of Qater 24-22, 21-15 later in the day.
"Our experience has helped us take the match today," said Wu. "This is the
first time we have played in the Asian Games. We just need to become familiar
with the venue."
Another Chinese combination Zhou Shun and Li Jian also looked impressive in
their relaxed 21-10, 21-14 win over Tupaz Parley and Verayo Rhovyl of the
Philippines.
The Chinese duo will face Vorobyev Dmitriy and Sidorenko Alexey of Kazakhstan
in the next round, who toppled Bahrain's Al Merza Qarder Abdulla Ahmed/Omran
Osama Isa Ali in straight sets with identical score of 21-16 on Monday.
Two Japanese teams, Nishimura Koichi and Watanabe Satoshi, and Asahi Kentaro
and Shiratori Katsuhiro also both gained straight-set win over their Malaysian
and Sri Lankan opponents respectively.
Saulko Pavel and Zabuslayev Pavel, another pairing form Kazakhstan, also
upset their Bahrain's peers Parwees Yunes Hasan Abbas and Qarqoor Hasan Aqeel
Hasan Ahmed, Bahrain 2-0, while host players Anber Mohammed and Salem Mohammed
were beaten by the Indonesian pairing Salim Agus and Supriadi Supriadi.
China, Japan, Kazakhstan and Indonesia have qualified for Wednesday's third
round, while the remaining 15 teams in the men's tournament will now play in the
second-chance bracket in draw, which begins on Tuesday.
For the women's part, Hong Kong duo Kong Cheuk Yee and Tse WingHung, who lost
in first round, survived from a sudden-death match after beat their Mongolian
rivals 2-0.
However, the Iraqi team Lida Agasi and Liza Aghasy suffered a second loss to
the Sri Lankan combination Geethika Lalani Gunawardana and Withanage Sujeewa
Wijesinghe, almost losing chance for the next round.
Twenty-three teams contest the men's tournament, while 14 women teams compete
for champion in beach volleyball event.
China finished 1-2 in the women's beach volleyball and took a bronze in the
men's sport in the 2002 Asian Games.
