All-mighty Chinese team of table tennis suffered its first casualty at the
Asian Games here on Tuesday as the mixed doubles duo Ma Long and Guo Yan were
ousted at the quarter-finals with a 3-2 defeat to their South Korea opponents.
Other matches saw all Chinese paddlers making it through into the semifinals
of individual events, including Ma Lin and Wang Nan, who easily crushed Hong
Kong duo Ko Lai Chak and Zhang Rui 3-1 andset up a mixed doubles semifinal match
up with South Korean pair Joo Sae Hyuk and Kim Kyung Ah.
The newly paired-up Ma and Guo were beaten 11-7, 11-13, 11-9, 9-11 and 12-10
by Lee Jong Woo and Lee Eun Hee in the morning after Ma sent a receive into the
net.
"At the end of the match, I moved back too far away from the table and
granted the opponents a 11-10 lead, and for the match point, we just lost the
control," commented the 18-year-old Ma, who is making his debut in the Asiad and
paired up with Guo Yan for the first time.
"Also we were too much intimated by the tense of the game," he added.
Guo Yan echoed: "We missed several good chances and we need more time to
improve our teamwork."
The Korean pair of Lees will next face Singapore's Yang Zi and Li Jia Wei,
who knocked out Hong Kong pair Li Ching and Tie Yana, 2-11, 4-11, 11-8, 11-8,
11-2.
In the evening singles games, Ma Lin and Wang Hao each met fierce resistance
from their quarter-final rivals before both winning 4-2. They will meet Hong
Kong's Li Ching and Olympic champion Ryu Seung Min from South Korea in the
semifinals.
China's ace paddler Wang Nan romped into the women's singles semifinals by
kicking out South Korean defensive player Kim Kyung Ah in straight sets.
"We have met each other a lot of times and I know exactly how she plays,"
said Wang.
Wang took the game 11-7, 11-7, 11-6, 12-10 with patient play and she will
next play Tie Yana of Hong Kong, who overcame Japan'stop paddler Ai Fukuhara
5-11, 11-9, 13-15, 11-8, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8.
"Kim is a very tenacious player, so I keep very concentrated," said Wang, who
had won three matches in the women's singles round of 16, doubles and mixed
doubles early in the day.
"Right now, I just start to feel a bit tired," said the 28-year-old.
China's teenage paddler Guo Yue also reached the singles semifinals with a
4-0 win over Kim Mi Yong of DPR Korea and will face Olympic semifinalist Li Jia
Wei, who beat South Korean Kwak Bang Bang 3-0 in a clash of two former Chinese.
In the men's doubles, Hong Kong's Ko Lai Chak/Li Ching and Chinese Taipei's
Chiang Peng Lung/Chuang Chih Yuan made it to the semifinals, in which they will
take on Olympic champions Ma Lin/Chen Qi and Ma Long/Wang Hao.
The women's doubles semifinal berths went to Wang Nan/Chen Qing and Guo
Yue/Li Xiaoxia, both of China, Chinese Taipei's Huang Yi Hua/Lu Yun Feng, and
Hong Kong's Tie Yana and Zhang Rui.
The Asian Games men's and women's doubles events will be concluded Wednesday
with the semifinals to be held at noon and finals in the
evening.
