Chinese pair Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewei enjoyed an easy win to enter the women's badminton doubles quarterfinals in Doha on Thursday at the 15th Asian Games, due to theinjury of one of their rivals.

The second-seeded Yang and Zhang led the lopsided game against Irani Behnaz Pirzamanbein and Nakisa Soltani Kalehmosalmani 20-2, while Pirzamanbein strained her right knee for saving a shot.

Having examined by their team's doctor, Pirzamanbein decided to retire from the hopeless game against the Athens Olympic champions.

Yang and Zhang, saving their energy for the quarterfinals, will face Lita Nurlita and Vita Marissa of Indonesia Thursday evening.

Nurlita and Marissa knocked off the fifth-seeded Thai pair Saralee Thoungthongkam and Satinee Jankrajangwong 22-20, 21-12.

Besides, world number one Gao Ling and Huang Sui of China cruised into the women's doubles quarterfinals by beating Malaysian Quay Swee Ling and Lim Pek Siah 21-8, 21-11 in the first game this morning.

"We are longing for the gold," said Gao, "So we must keep concentrated in every game."

The world champion pair is going to fight against Japanese Satoko Suetsuna and Miyuki Maeda, who finished off Pia Bernadet and Greysia Polii from Indonesia 21-19, 12-21, 21-13.

In the men's round of 16, Chinese doubles pairs Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng and Zheng Bo/Guo Zhendong both won in straight sets. However, Guo and Zheng were so unsatisfied with their performance that they refused to talk to the reporters.

Guo and Zheng triumphed over the fourth-seeded M Tazari Mohd Fairuzizuan and Lin Woon Fui from Malaysia 22-20, 25-23. They will lock horn with Luluk Hadiyanto and Alvent Yulianto Chandra of Indonesia this evening.

World number one Cai and Fu also met challenges in their 21-9 and 23-21 win over Sudket Prapakamol and Phattapol Ngensrisuk of Thailand.

"We won the first set easily. In the second set, we were a little bit abstracted and gave our oppoents the chances to catch up," said Fu.
