Tajik Dilshod Nazarov clinched his country's first ever gold medal at the
Asian Games on Friday when he threw 74.43 meters to win the men's hammer throw
final. The withdrawal of Japanese Olympic champion Koji Murobushi had left
the men's hammer throw competition wide open, and Nazarov, 24, made the winning
throw at his penultimate attempt. "I waited for this. I have been preparing
for this for a long time," said Nazarov. "This is a big victory for my
country. It is the first gold medal we have ever won at the Asian Games in any
sports," he added. Ali Zenkawi of Kuwait grabbed the silver medal with a toss
of 73.14m, while Japanese Hiroaki Doi had the bronze at
69.45m.
