Chinese twin sisters Jiang Wenwen and Jiang Tingting shocked their strongest
rivals Japanese by claiming first gold for the country in the duet synchronized
swimming at the 15th Asian Games in Doha on Friday. Performing as the Goddess
of the Wind, the 23-year-old Chinese showed a perfect free routine, totaling in
96.584 points ahead of Japanese duo Saho Harada/Emiko Suzuki 96.501. The
Chinese twins stopped Japan's unbeaten run at the Asian Games as Japan have won
every gold medal in the synchronized swimming since it was introduced to the
Asian Games on home turf in Hiroshima in 1994. Suffering from a lifting
mistake at the beginning, Harada / Suzuki had to settle for the silver. Anna
Kulkina/Arna Toktagan Arna of Kazakhstan and Cho Moung Kyoung/Kim Min Jeong of
South Korea finished third and fourth in 89.668 and 86.751
respectively. Coming from Sichuan province, Jiang Wenwen said: "We are
satisfied with our performance. We performed more relaxed and focused in the
free routine compared with the technical round in the morning. " "It is the
first gold won by Chinese synchronized swimmers. We are very, very happy! Our
aim is to get better results in tomorrow 's team event," added Jiang
Tingting.
