Two stoppage victories by Zou Shiming and Zhang Jianting apiece won China two
more semifinal berths of the boxing tournament at the Doha Asian Games in Doha
on Friday. Slashing his Indian opponent continuously with stylish combination
of right and left, Zou, the 2005 world champion, claimed an overwhelming victory
in his third match here with a 25- 5 lead. "I was quicker than him though he
is also good player placing in the top five of the games," said Zou, referring
to his rival, Sanjay Kisan Kolte from India. Zou is to take on Hong Woo Wan
of South Korea on Monday to compete for a final seat in the 48kg
category. Following Zou, Chinese boxer Zhang comfortably beat Pakistan's
Allah Bux to set up a last four encounter with Uzbekistan's Elshod Rasulov who
was a second round winner against Davran Khabirov of Kyrgyzstan. "I made sure
I had good footwork to keep the distance. When he attacked, I counter-attacked
and run and he could not hit me with his heavy jab," said the 19-year-old from
Wen Zhou, a city in Eastern China. "Zhang is not stronger but was quicker on
the ring, I hope him to get a gold medal in 75 category," said Dong Tingjiang,
one of his coaches. Syrian heavy bomber al Shami, a bronze medallist at the
Athens Olympic, pulled down a 40-22 win against Harpreet Singh of India in 91kg
category. Shami scored an astonishing 20 points and floored Singh in a two
minute spell in the second round to frighten his opponent in semifinals, Jasur
Matchanov of Uzbekistan. The Uzbeki, however, also proved his prowess by a
33-17 win over Jeon Byeong Gook of South Korea and the clash between the two
giants is expected to be held on Sunday.
