Teenage shuttler Yip Pui Yin from Hong Kong of China didn't stop her
dreamlike trip in the Doha Asiad after beating world number one Zhang Ning from
China in the quarterfinal. The 19-year-old shuttler romped into her first
ever Asian Games final in Doha on Friday. "Beating Zhang was like a dream and
winning the semifinal today was also like a dream," said a high spirited
Yip. The teenager defeated Hwang Hye Yeon from South Korea 21-14, 21- 19 to
set up a final clash in the women's singles with her experienced teammate Wang
Chen. While talking about her feelings of entering the final, Yip skipped the
comparatively lackluster semifinal, but reiterated her surprisingly triumph over
world number one Zhang on Thursday. "I still think I'm dreaming," said Yip,
"My aim was to reach the quarter-finals, since I had never thought that I was
able to beat Zhang." Yip fought a fierce and powerful game to down the Athens
Olympic champion 21-19, 21-19. The teenager smashed a lot to force the top seed
Zhang into many a mistake. After claiming the unexpected victory, an excited
Yip waved her rackets and shouted with joy. Yip said, "I asked myself if it
was true when I led the second game 15-4. I could not believe that the win was
just in front of me. "Therefore, I did not concentrate on the game, which
gifted Zhang several points in row. Luckily, I finally secured win." Starting
the badminton training at the age of six, Yip burst onto the stage in last
year's world championships by knocking off Japanese star Kanako Yonekura to
advance into the last 16. At this year's world championships in Madrid, she
was ousted by French veteran Pi Hongyan in the round of 16. "I still need to
improve my skills," said Yip, "And I want to learn from those top players during
the games."
