Zheng/Gao win badminton mixed doubles at Doha Asiad

Zheng Bo and Gao Ling won an all- Chinese final in the badminton mixed
doubles event at the 15th Doha Asian Games in Doha on Friday. The
newly-combined Zheng and Gao overcame their teammates Xie Zhongbo and Zhang
Yawen to won the opening set 21-16. The third-seeded Xie and Zhang bounced
back strongly to tie 23- 23, but lost the following two points. Sudket
Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam from Thailand and Mohd Fairuzizuan/Wong Pei
Tty from Malaysia took bronze medals. "I'm very satisfied about this gold,"
said Zheng, who threw away his racket and lay down on the court after the
win. "We have prepared very well in a very short time. We put a lot of effort
in the preparation for the final," said Zheng Bo, a 23- year-old Asian Games
debutant. The 27-year-old Gao, who played two mixed doubles and one women 's
doubles games on Thursday, said, "I don't know how I did it. It wasn't easy. Now
I am a little tired." Although Zheng and Gao only paired up three weeks
before the Asian Games, they showed their power in Thursday's semifinals by
knocking off Indonesian world number one Nova Widianto and Liliyana in straight
sets. In Friday's semifinals, Zheng and Gao finished off Malaysian M Tazari
Mohd Fairuzizuan and Wong Pei Tty 21-11, 21-13 with powerful smashes and quick
shots. "We had set a goal to win at least three gold medals and we have
already won more than three. So it's good," said Chinese head coach Li
Yongbo. China clinched both the men's and women's teams golds and has secured
another in the women's doubles event.
