"Quality" of gold medals also matters: Chinese sports officials

China have won a big number of gold medals by far which is good, but not all
of their "quality" is that satisfactory, said Chinese sports officials in Doha
on Saturday at the Doha Asian Games. "We have many gold medals by far, but
most of them were captured in competition far below the world top level," said
Duan Shijie, deputy chef de mission of the Chinese delegation here. "We have
gold medals of good quality but many of them are not," agreed another deputy
chef de mission, Cui Dalin. By far, China have bagged 99 golds, 55 silvers
and 27 bronzes to be ranked top of the medals tally with 181, leaving Japan in a
distant second with 31 golds, 38 silvers and 46 bronzes. "We had a few good
results of world class in weightlifting, shooting, swimming, and track and
field, but for most events, there is a big gap between us and the world level,"
said Duan. Chen Yanqing set three world records in snatch, jerk as well as
total result in women's 58kg category while Mu Shuangshuang surpassed the
previous world mark in snatch in women's over 75kg weightlifting event. Wu
Peng brought Chinese swimming a gold in men's 200m butterfly in one minute 54.91
seconds, which should be the second fastest time in the world this
year. "Their achievements impressed me but the athletes should be aware of
the fact that Asian Games are not the same as Olympic Games. In the Olympics,
they will be faced with more pressure, stronger opponents and fiercer
competition," said Duan. "I think they should be tempered by more high-level
competition before standing the test of an Olympics," he said. China took 16
golds in swimming in the 15th Asian Games while in Athens Olympic Games, China
only had one title in swimming by Luo Xuejuan in women's 100m
breaststroke. By far, the biggest delegation of over 900 had five gold medals
in track and field and five in rowing but in Athens there were only two in track
and field through world record holder Liu Xiang in 110m hurdles and 10,000m
runner Xing Huina and one in rowing.
