Iran beat Syria 95-79 in Doha on Saturday to make top eight at the Doha Asian
Games men's basketball tournament. Iran, who finished third in Group A with
three wins against two losses, will play the second place winner of Group B in
Tuesday's quarter-finals. Syria and Bahrain, an 84-44 loser to Jordan in
another Group A match earlier on Saturday, were eliminated from the knockout
stage after finishing fifth and sixth in the group. Samad Nikkhah scored 34
points as Iran led all the way for the victory at the Basketball Indoor
Hall. Thanks to Iran's victory, South Korea also clinched a place in top
eight before playing host Qatar in the last round group competitions later on
Saturday. Twelve teams are competing in two groups in the second round with
top four finishers from each pool qualifying for the quarter- finals.
