Chinese boxers Yang Bo and Zhang Jianting settled for two bronze medals after
losing to the Philippines' veteran Violito Payla and Elshod Rasulov of
Uzbekistan respectively in the semifinals of the Doha Asiad boxingcompetitions
on Sunday.
Zhang failed to defend Rasulov's attacks since his right foot was twisted
when he was sliding to the ground by a heavy punch on the face in the second
bout.
"I was quite unlucky. However, his movement and power is betterand he has
much more experience than me," Zhang told the press after the contest.
The 21-year-old boxer then told Xinhua that he was satisfied and happy with
the bronze, noting that it was his first international match and he had learned
much from his opponents.
Yang, a surprise package of the competition with a 41-21 win over South
Korean world champion in the quarterfinal, was overwhelmed by a more experienced
Filipino on Sunday. The contest was halted with Payla leading 40-20 on points in
the second bout.
Payla will take on Somjit Jongjohor, a defending champion of the Busan Asiad,
of Thailand in the boxing final of the flyweight 51kg category.
Thai boxing giant Manus Boojumnong won a hard fight against Serik Sapiyev of
Kazakhstan who was crowned the world champion title of 64kg category in 2005.
Hurted by Kazakh's heavy punches, the Thai was checked by doctor for three
times in the final bout with a four-point margin.
He said he was quite scared for the failure of the medical check, fearing
that he might be announced defeated due to his blooding wounds.
"I would like to thank everyone for giving me a chance," he said, referring
to his return to the ring after two years' absence.
