Taekwondo roundup: Asia still on top with South Korea's dominance
11/12/2006 10:47

Winning nine gold medals out of 16 on offer, South Korea claimed its supreme dominance in taekwondo competitions at the Doha Asiad with China emerging with three gold medals from women's events.

After four days' competition, South Korea took the top place in the final medal standings with nine gold, one silver and one bronze. China, not winning any gold medal in Asiad before the Doha Games, took three gold, one silver and two bronze medals to clinch the second place. Another Asian powerhouse Iran settled for the third place by claiming one gold, two silver and five bronze medals to show their ability.

"Asian taekwondo is on top of the world and the competition level in the Asiad is even higher than the Olympics," Zhao Lei, vice president of the Chinese Taekwondo Association told Xinhua.

"Though China was in the second place in the medal standings, we are still not in the first class in Asia," he added.

"South Korea and Iran are the leaders of the Asian taekwondo. Though Iran only won one gold this time, Iranian players are stronger than Chinese in men's events in particular."

"But I can say that Chinese female players are quite good," he added.

Wu Jingyu of China, ended China's gold-drought in the Asiad taekwondo history when she won in the women's 47kg division.

Luo Wei, Athens Olympics champion, clinched the second gold medal for China as she took a victory in the women's 72kg division. And China finished their tour in Doha perfectly with the third gold taken by Chen Zhong, another Olympic Champion, in the women's over 72kg class.

Nevertheless, China's outstanding performance was overshadowed by South Korean's.

"I think even in the upcoming Beijing Olympics, South Korea will still lead the medal standings," Zhao said.

Iran broke South Korea's stronghold in the men's 84kg as Karami Yossef overcame Park Kyeong Hoon to win the only gold medal for Iranian taekwondo.

"Iran is very strong but they don't have enough luck this time. They should have won more gold medals," Zhao said.

"In the Beijing Olympics, I predict that the Asian players will be outstanding. But we should also pay attention to the European and American players," he added.
