South Korean archer Park Sung Hyun, the double winner of the Athens Olympics,
claimed her first Asiad individual title despite stiff and shifting
winds in Doha on Monday.
The 23-year-old Park outshot her compatriot Yun Ok Hee in the gold medal
match with 95-91. Yun, the individual winner of the World Cup in Shanghai this
year, took the silver medal.
"I estimate that the wind this afternoon traveled 8km per hour, sometimes
even faster than that," said Tian Yuling, the coach of the China's women team.
"We seldom saw such low scores. You know, the South Koreans normally can collect
more than 110 points from 12 arrows."
But the South Koreans have prepared for that.
"We had known about the wind so we had trained and prepared forthis condition
in expectation of that," said Park, the only South Korean archer who had won all
major international individual titles. "I am really happy that two Koreans were
in the final, andI am grateful to all the archery supporters.
"We can't just settle for the individuals but will train for and concentrate
on the upcoming team event."
According to the 21-year-old Yun, Park was definitely the leader.
"Every time I compete against Sung Hyun, I lose to her," said Yun. "It's only
natural because she is experienced."
China's debutant Zhao Ling won the bronze by overcoming India's Dola Banerjee
with 83-77.
"I didn't shoot very well today, it's too windy right here," said Zhao. "I'm
confident I would do better if the weather was not that windy. Actually, I had a
chance to topple Park Sung Hyun in the semifinal, but it was pity that I didn't
catch it."
