Jordan beat Kazakhstan 99-91 in overtime to make the semi-finals of the Doha
Asian Games men's basketball tournament in Doha on Tuesday.
Zaid Abbas, who had played only one minute in regular time, came from the
bench to grab a crucial offensive rebound and scored two free
throws, before an amazing interception finished by a slam dunk gave Jordan a
five-point lead with just over one minute remaining in the extra time.
Kazakhstan was leading by six points with less than one minute to play in the
regular time, but Jordanian veteran Zaid Al Khas scored four points including
the game-tying basket with less than 10 seconds left on the clock to help force
the overtime, during which Jordan outscored Kazakhstan 17-9.
"We started off playing very well for the first 25 minutes of the game and
then our boys started getting nervous and started missing easy shots," said
Jordan coach Mario Palma. "We couldn't defend the pick-and-roll that Kazakhstan
was using against us. We found out that we were really successful when we
started pressing them full court."
"When we got into overtime we knew that we were mentally and physically
better prepared than Kazakhstan."
Al Khas finished with game-high 30 points and 11 rebounds with Fadel Al
Najjar and Wesam Alsous adding 17 and 16 respectively.
Kazakhstan's 18-year-old Anton Ponomarev netted 21 points and 11 rebounds.
