The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is establishing mechanisms to
address the challenges facing the region's energy supply "in systemic and
comprehensive manner," said the APEC Secretariat today. The Secretariat, in a
report on climate change, said APEC has launched initiatives to promote clean
and efficient energy production and use. It said APEC has been setting up
mechanisms to encourage banks to invest in efficient and renewable energies, to
develop natural gas trade, to seek working out a list of environmental goods and
to tackle investment barriers to the greater use of cleaner and more efficient
fuels. APEC also has been in a hard bid to promote energy efficiency measures
to mitigate the effects of climate change, according to the report. It said
APEC has designed projects to promote renewable energy technologies, to help
expand the use of clean coal technologies and natural gas in electricity
generation, and to encourage relevant economies to ensure the safety of civilian
nuclear energy. APEC has been working with industries to improve fuel
efficiency and to promote alternative fuel use with an aim to reduce transport
emission, said the report. It added that APEC has also spare no effort to
increase awareness and preparations for the potential repercussions of climate
change. Besides, the report said, APEC has built mechanisms including the
Energy Business Network and the 2007 APEC Energy Business Forum for
government-to-business dialogues. APEC has also boosted cooperation and
partnership with other organizations such as the International Energy Agency to
address energy security, climate change and other environmental
challenges. APEC is holding its annual Leaders Week in Sydney, Australia,
from Sept. 2-9. Climate change and energy security are among the top agendas at
the meeting. APEC is a regional economic cooperation forum which was set up
in 1989, grouping 21 members.
