The newly-elected president of the 13th Session of Conference of Parties to
the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, expressed hope today that the
meeting could formulate a roadmap for another climate change arrangement for
post Kyodo implementation.
Rachmat Witoelar, who just elected as the president of conference after the
opening of the UN climate change conference today, said in an interview earlier
with local press that he is basically expecting a clearer and more transparent
implementation of the Kyodo Protocol on climate change would be agreed upon
during the Bali meeting.
Rachmat, who is also Indonesian Environment Minister, said the roadmap, among
others, will include a new commitment for further reduction of carbon emissions
from the 5 percent agreed in the Kyodo agreement, thus paving the way for a
better and more legally binding agreement that will be negotiated in next year's
conference in Poland and then signed in Copenhagen.
"That is why securing a positive outcome from the Bali conference is very
crucial. A failure will mean jeopardizing our survival on this Earth," he
stressed.
The conference, which will last till Dec. 14, is attended by more than 10,000
people from some 180 countries.
The conference, among other things, will discuss mitigation, adaptation,
transfer of technology and financing.
