World No. 1 Roger Federer eased past 13th seed Tomas Berdych in the fourth
round of the Australian Open here on Sunday in straight set to book his place in
the quarter-finals.
Federer will face James Blake in the last eight after the American
whitewashed Marin Cilic in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 early on Sunday.
Federer, who needed four and a half hours to advance when against Janko
Tipsarevic on Saturday, was much easier against Berdych and took the final
victory at 6-4, 7-6 (9/7), 6-3 in less than two hours.
Holding four points on his own serve in the first set, Federer broke Berdych
twice to win it 6-4.
Berdych broke Federer's first serve game in the second set but was soon be
leveled by Federe as the set soon went to a tie-breaker. Berdych made a series
unforced errors on set-points and went two sets down at 9-7.
The third set was completely Federer's match as he dominated with his
powerful serve and ran to the final victory at 6-3.
In other matches, Novak Djokovic, the No. 3 seed from Serbia, beat local
hopes Lleyton Hewitt 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 and will face No. 5 David Ferrer, who
defeated fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in four sets to reach his third
career Grand Slam quarterfinal.
In women's single, eighth seed Venus Williams of the United States advanced
into the top eight by beating unseeded Pole Marta Domachowska 6-4, 6-4. The
27-year-old will face Ana Ivanovic in the quarter-final.
Ivanovic overcame a slow start to defeat unseeded Caroline Wozniacki of
Denmark 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).
