Fifth seed Maria Sharapova ended top-ranked Justine Henin's 32-match winning streak with a 6-4, 6-0 victory to book a place in the Australian Open semifinals in Melbourne yesterday.

Last year's runner-up Sharapova came out hot, showed her control and power with ground strokes during the game and left Henin little chance to take scores.

The Belgian fought back from 5-2 down to 5-4 in the first set but an determined Sharapova won seven games in a row to race to the victory in one hour and 38 minutes.

It was the first time that Henin had lost a set 6-0 since 2002, at the first round of the French Open.

"She did her match. She played very high level of tennis, I have to agree with that," said Henin after the match.

"She started the match much better than me. I came back, but I wasn't good enough. She just did everything better than me today. She served consistently and she's been much more aggressive and looked like it was her day and probably her tournament," added Henin.

But Henin was not the only loser, defending champion Serena Williams was also eliminated by Serbia's Jelena Jankovic by straight sets early yesterday.

The American was totally overwhelmed by Jankovic and lost the semifinal 6-3, 6-4 in one hour 39 minutes.

Hour after her defeat in women's singles, she and elder sister Venus Williams were ousted from the women's doubles by Chinese pair of Zheng Jie and Yan Zi, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

"I think that I went crazy, maybe, and I made a lot of mistakes. I didn't really play the game I wanted to play. I am obviously extremely disappointed. I'm one that enjoys the battles and I enjoy the victories as well. I am definitely not really happy right now, especially not with my performance," said Serena Williams.

On the men's singles, second-ranked Rafael Nadal had a 7-5, 6-3,6-1 win over No. 24 Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, making the semifinals for the first time since 2005.
