The spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said on Wednesday
Solana was not " particularly satisfied" with the early announcement of the
election result in Ukraine. "Mr Solana is not particularly satisfied that the
election result was announced so early," said Luis Amorim, Solana's spokesman,
when answering a phone call from Xinhua. Earlier, election officials in
Ukraine declared that Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych won the election over
opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko. The announcement raised fears of
violence in Kiev, where tens of thousands of demonstrators have been demanding
that the results be overturned. On Wednesday afternoon, Solana held talks
with leaders of party groups in the European Parliament, briefing them the
situation in Ukraine. Amorim said Solana urged political mediation on
resolving the issue and that he had called Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and
opposition party leader, urging a negotiated settelment of the
crisis. "Solana himself is willing to travel to Ukraine at appropriate time,"
added Amorim.
