The Ukrainian congress chairman Vladimir Litvin urged on Saturday evening in
Kiev his colleagues to reach agreement on organizing another round of balloting
for presidential elections. Litvin made the call when asked by local media to
comment on the resolution passed earlier Saturday afternoon by the congress,
which announced that the second round of the fourth Ukrainian presidential
election is of no legal effect. "The resolution is a political assessment on
the current situation by the congress," said Litvin. He stressed that the
legislation should also make more decisions to enhance the "political
assessment". On Saturday, the Ukrainian congress convened a special session
to discuss how to resolve the current election crisis. Among the attending 429
congressmen, 255 voted for the resolution. However, the congressmen failed to
pass a decision to organize another round of election. Litvin said the
congressmen should immediately consider when to organize another round of
balloting. "It is urgent to make decisions on re-balloting and the issue can
not be delayed," he was quoted by local media, saying that the law makers should
make decision as soon as possible, so as to set track for the next
action. Litvin also said the country should consider political reform in face
of this comprehensive political crisis. Organizing another round of balloting
had been put forward by opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko but it was rejected
by his rival Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich. The resolution
passed by the congress has no legal effect.
