Ukraine parliament backslides from overturning election results
1/12/2004 3:31

The Ukrainian parliament passed a draft resolution on Tuesday to halt the effectiveness of a previous resolution it had made on Nov. 27 which overturned the results of presidential elections.

This shows that the parliament, or the Verkhovna Rada, has backslid from its position on the election results which was announced by the Central Elections Commission on Nov. 24.

The move angered the opposition supporters and it was reported by local media that some of them attempted to rush into the parliament.

However, the Ukraine national news agency Ukrinform reported that parliament speaker Vladimir Litvin told the press after the parliamentary session that the congress would not cancel the resolution of Nov. 27.

The house would not pass a resolution that might be against the Constitution and the will of the people, the congress chief was quoted as saying.

On Nov. 27, the parliament convened an emergency session, expectedly passed a non-binding resolution with a vote of 255 out of 429, announcing that the second round of the fourth Ukrainian presidential election was of no legal effect.
