Ukrain's current Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich said Tuesday that he
would nominate his rival Viktor Yushchenko for the prime minister position if
the disputed presidential election Yanukovich won is ruled as legitimate.
"If my victory is confirmed, I am ready to offer the post of prime minister
to Viktor Yushchenko," Yanukovich told a press conference, adding he would join
hands with his rival to form a joint government and carry out political and
constitutional reforms.
Yanukovich, declared the winner of the Nov. 21 presidential run-off, also
promised the prime minister's post would be the prime government position after
the political reforms.
Yushchenko immediately rejected the offer saying he was unable to accept the
proposal, local media reported.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday began a second day of hearings on the
presidential crisis.
Yanukovich warned that if the court supported the opposition complaint that
the elections in the eastern provinces of Donetsk and Lugansk were fraudulent,
his camp would file an appeal to the court on reviewing the elections in western
provinces.
If the court rules the elections invalid, Yanukovich declared he will not
stand against Yushchenko to avoid a split in the country.
Yanukovich also accused parliament and the Supreme Court of succumbing to the
pressure of opposition camp by discussing the issue of dismissing his
government.
