The hearings held by the Ukrainian Supreme Court on the appeal concerning
presidential election frauds would last several weeks, representatives from both
camps said in Kiev on Monday.
The Supreme Court of Ukraine on Monday started t he hearings on the appeal,
which was filed by the opposition camp after the election standoff emerged last
week.
The Central Elections Commission announced last Wednesday that Prime Minister
Viktor Yanukovich won the election, while the Supreme Court ordered to suspend
the inauguration last Thursday after it started to handle the appeal by the camp
of Viktor Yushchenko.
Yushchenko demanded that another round of elections be held on Dec. 12.
The Ukrainian national congress, the Supreme Council, passed a non-binding
resolution last Saturday, announcing that the second round of presidential
elections invalid, but it failed to wrap up an agreement to re-organize
elections.
According to Ukrainian laws, only the Central Elections Commission has the
power to decide on whether to re-organize elections or not, while the Supreme
Court has the final say on whether there was fraud in the elections.
