Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich said Monday he would go on
vacation to campaign for the new round of presidential polls.
Announcing the decision in a statement to the press, Yanukovich said he
wanted the current government to be allowed to complete its term.
On Friday, Ukraine's Supreme Court invalidated the results of the second
round of presidential elections and set Dec. 26 the date for new elections.
Following the court's ruling, opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko called for
the dismissal of the government headed by Yanukovich.
Yanukovich, for his part, said he wanted the government to stayon in order
not to further damage the economy, and insisted it wasthe only request he has
for the president and the parliament.
Yanukovich said as a citizen of Ukraine, he would abide by the ruling, even
if he didn't agree with the court's decision, which he described as illegal and
made under pressure.
He had named a new manager for his campaign, and his rival, Yushchenko, has
also started preparations for the new run-off.
