The United States said on Wednesday that it will provide an additional 3
million dollars to fund US observers in the run-off election in crisis-hit
Ukraine.
"We will be spending an additional 3 million dollars to help fund the
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), US and
nongovernmental monitoring and other election-related activities. The 3 million
dollars will support 100 US observers as part of a 960 observer OSCE mission to
Ukraine," State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said at a news briefing.
The United States urged all parties in Ukraine to move quickly to implement
the decision of holding a run-off election on Dec. 26 and to ensure that the
vote "be democratic, fair and just and produces results that accurately reflect
the will of the Ukrainian people."
Ereli said the United States thanks Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski,
Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus and the European Union commissioner Javier
Solana for their mediation in the Ukrainian election crisis.
The United States has admitted that it provided funds to institutions in
Ukraine to have a fair election, but it denied ever providing funds to the
presidential candidates.
Ukraine has been in a political crisis since the Nov. 21 presidential
election, victory in which has been claimed by both pro-Moscow candidate, Prime
Minister Viktor Yanukovich, and pro-Western candidate, opposition leader Viktor
Yushchenko.
Ukraine's highest court has ordered to have a new runoff vote on Dec. 26.
