Viktor Yanukovych's campaign manager said Wednesday that they would delay
filing their complaints to the Supreme Court, aimed at challenging Viktor
Yushchenko's victory in the Dec. 26 re-run off for the presidency.
"We will file the complaint within a few days," Yanukovych's campaign manager
Taras Chornovyl said, adding that according to law the complaint must be filed
by Tuesday.
Yushchenko was declared by Ukraine's Central Election Commission the official
winner of the rerun for the presidency, with 51.99 percent of the votes against
44.20 percent for Yanukovych. But Yanukovych has refused to concede defeat.
Yanukovych's allies had previously said they would file a complaint to the
Supreme Court by 02:00 p.m. (1200 GMT) Wednesday.
Yanukovych claimed Tuesday that there was widespread fraud in the Dec. 26
vote and he would demand "the annulment of the so-called rerun."
Hundreds of Yanukovych backers rallied Wednesday in his hometown of Donetsk
and chanted anti-Yushchenko slogans.
Earlier on Tuesday Yanukovych said that if his appeal to the Supreme Court is
unsuccessful, he will take the fight to the European Court of Human Rights.
The final results must be approved by the Supreme Court and published in two
official newspapers before Yushchenko can be inaugurated, leaving the
Yanukovych's campaign some time to file appeals.
