Newly elected Ukrainian President Victor Yuschenko is going to make his first
visit to the headquarters of the European Union (EU) next week, according to a
press release issued by the European Parliament (EP) here Friday.
Yuschenko is making the visit on Thursday at the invitation of EP President
Josep Borrell. He is also expected to hold talks with senior officials of the
European Commission.
He is also to address the plenary session of the EU legislature.
Borrell described the Ukrainian President's visit as "an important political
matter" and said that the EU had played a key role in the peaceful solution of
the Ukraine crisis.
A new era has opened for Ukraine, the EU and the European continent as a
whole, Borrell said, hoping that Yuschenko will use the occasion to explain his
future plans and prospects for the relations between his country and the EU.
As soon as Yuschenko was declared winner of the general elections, EU leaders
were among the first to deliver their congratulatory messages.
