Opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko, who won the rerun of Ukraine's
presidential election, will be inaugurated as president on Sunday, parliament
speaker Volodymyr Litvin said Thursday.
"The electoral campaign is finished and at noon on January 23 we will hold
the inauguration ceremony," Litvin told reporters.
Former prime minister Viktor Yanukovych won a disputed presidential runoff on
Nov. 21, 2004, triggering weeks of protestsby Yushchenko's supporters. The
Supreme Court later annulled the election results and ruled for a re-vote of the
runoff on Dec. 26.
The Supreme Court on Thursday confirmed Yushchenko as president. Ukrainian
official newspapers have made public the victory of Yushchenko in the Dec. 26
presidential runoff. Publication of the results in official newspapers gave
parliament the right to set an inauguration date.
