Palestinian Presidential Election
The 2005 Palestinian presidential election¡ªthe first to be held since 1996¡ªis to take place on January 9, 2005 in the Palestinian-inhabited territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Voters will elect a new president of the Palestinian Authority to replace Yasser Arafat, who died on November 11, 2004.

Mahmoud Abbas, candidate of the Fatah movement, proclaimed a sweeping victory in the Palestinian presidential election Sunday night.
