The Spanish government said Friday it hoped the Palestinians will elect on
Sunday their "best leader"to lead them to negotiations and a permanent peace
with Israel.
At a news conference, Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said the
elections for the presidency of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA)
"develop appropriately."
"It has been shown during all these weeks that there has been agood political
debate in Palestine," he added.
He refused to give specific support for any of the candidates to the
presidency, among whom the favorite is Mahmoud Abbas, chairman of the Palestine
Liberation Organization.
The PNA presidential elections is scheduled for Sunday when voters will
choose a successor to late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, who died on Nov.
