Former US President Jimmy Carter arrived here on Saturday to monitor Sunday's
Palestinian presidential election, Palestinian sources said.
Palestine Liberation Organization chief Mahmoud Abbas met with Carter and
briefed him on preparations for holding the election and the importance of
ensuring a suitable atmosphere for a fair voting process, the sources said.
Carter visited grave site of late leader Yasser Arafat in Ramallah.
Carter and his US observer delegation will oversee the election along with
some other 800 foreign observers.
Carter helped hammer out the 1978 Camp David Accord that led to the first
peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in 1979.
