President Hu Jintao will join more than 50 other state leaders today in
Moscow for ceremonies commemorating the end of World War II. On the sidelines
of the celebrations, Hu will meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin,
to discuss ways to promote bilateral ties as well as major international and
regional issues of common concern. Hu arrived in the Russian capital
yesterday. The former Soviet Union fought 80 percent of the Nazi German
forces in Europe, costing the country 27 million lives and immeasurable national
wealth. The Chinese president will also meet other heads of state attending
the ceremonies. Hu's trip is aimed at promoting the Sino-Russian strategic
cooperation partnership, enhancing political mutual trust and highlighting
China's foreign policy of peace and its determination to seek peaceful
development. Hu will also meet Russian veterans who helped China fight
Japanese invaders in World War II. China will hold a ceremony to commemorate
the 60th anniversary of its victory against Japanese invaders, according to a
notice issued on Saturday. The ceremony will feature a large commemorative
exhibition and a seminar. All overseas patriots, generals and soldiers who
fought in the war are invited to attend, along with their families. The notice
did not say when the ceremony would be held. China will screen commemorative
movies and TV series, print publications and issue stamps and coins in memory of
the victory, the notice said. China's eight-year Anti-Japanese War was an
important part of the world's war against fascism, and the Chinese people made
tremendous sacrifices and contributions to the defeat of fascist forces, the
notice said. The Communist Party of China played a central part in uniting
the nation to fight the war, said the notice, adding that the commemorative
activities will be aimed at motivating Chinese both at home and abroad to strive
for China's rejuvenation and world peace.
