Saddam to sue over prison photos
21/5/2005 12:00

Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein plans to take legal action after a British tabloid published photos of him half-naked in prison.

Saddam's chief lawyer, Ziad al-Khasawneh, said that the pictures infringed upon Saddam's rights for privacy.

U.S. military officials issued a statement saying publishing these photos was "in clear violation of U.S. Defence Department directives," and, "possibly, Geneva Convention guidelines for the humane treatment of detained individuals."

The U.S. has launched an investigation into how the photos were leaked.

The Sun tabloid published photos of Saddam Hussein in prison on Friday, including in his underwear. It is believed the photos were taken over a year ago.
