Czech Republic to increase police patrols
8/7/2005 9:43
The Czech Republic will reinforce police patrols in the metro, on railways
and at department stores and significant buildings as of Thursday in response to
the latest terrorist attacks in Britain, Interior Minister Frantisek Bublan
said. He said later that he had no information that the Czech Republic was
threatened with a terrorist attack. "Representatives of intelligence services
will shortly inform me about the latest developments. The government will do
everything not to ignore anything in this area," Czech Prime Minister Jiri
Paroubek said. The guarding of Prague's Ruzyne airport and power stations
will also be reinforced, he said. Police patrols will be beefed up by
hundreds officers who will come from street police. "The measure will concern
all strategic buildings," Bublan said, adding that the level of security would
be the same as that installed by the Czech Republic after terrorist attacks in
Madrid in March 2004. Paroubek said that the Czech government condemned the
barbaric terrorist attack against London's civilian population. "The government
has also expressed its full solidarity in the fight against terrorism," he
said. President Vaclav Klaus said that "it was shocking that terrorist
attacks reached the European continent, and also Britain. " "We will issue a
statement in which we express our solidarity and will send a letter to Prime
Minister Tony Blair. This is a shocking event and it is bad," Klaus said.
