Italy raises security level
8/7/2005 9:45
Italy has raised the level of its anti- terrorism alert and made extra
security arrangements in the wake of London bombings, Interior Minister Giuseppe
Pisanu said Thursday. Speaking in the Senate, Pisanu said security was being
heightened in particular around "sensitive British objectives" in Italy, such as
embassies, consulates and the headquarters of British businesses. "The level
of alarm has been raised, just as in other European countries," he said, adding
that the interior ministry's antiterrorism unit will be working round the
clock. "The government will leave nothing undone to guarantee national
security," he added. The minister said information on the London bombings was
still sketchy, but said the one on a bus was probably carried out by a suicide
bomber. So far there have been reports of two Italians being slightly injured
in the blasts. Pisanu said the foreign ministry's crisis unit was in contact
with emergency services in London for news about other Italians. He said
there are 115,000 Italians resident in London and about 60,000 Italian tourists
in Britain.
