London attacks not to alter Australia's fight against terrorism: PM
8/7/2005 11:57
Australian Prime Minister John Howard said Friday the terrorist attacks on
London will not change Australia's resolve to fight against
terrorism. Howard's statement came one day after a series of coordinated
blasts targeting London's public transport system killed dozens of people and
injured hundreds. British Prime Minister Tony Blair has said the attacks were
carried out to coincide with the Group of Eight summit under way in
Scotland. Howard told Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio that the
attacks won't affect Australia's troop deployment in Iraq. "I want to make it
very plain that this kind of attack will not alter the attitude of the
government of Australia towards terrorism and towards the commitments we have
with our American, British and other friends to Iraq to Afghanistan," he
said. "People must understand that a country like Australia will not be
bullied or intimidated and the people who believe we can are wrong," he
said. "It (the attacks) will in fact steel the determination of people who
recognize the threat that terrorism poses to democratic societies to go on with
the fight against terrorism," he said. Howard is scheduled to visit Britain
later this month. He said he will "certainly be continuing with" his trip to
London. He said Australian security experts had advised him the attack would
not affect current terror alert levels in Australia. "The advice from our
experts who met last night was not to alter the medium level of alert that's
been in place since the 12th of September 2001," he said. Seven Australians
were injured in the attacks. Howard said one of them was in critical condition.
