8/7/2005 15:46
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Donald Tsang,
said Friday morning Hong Kong is upgrading its security arrangements following
Thursday's bomb attacks in London in which at least 38 people were killed and
hundreds injured. Tsang said he was deeply saddened and shocked by what had
happened, adding that terrorism was the enemy of the civilized world. He
called up British Consul General in Hong Kong Thursday night, assuring that the
government will protect the security of the British residents and residents of
other foreign countries in Hong Kong. He said the Hong Kong's financial
market is basically in good operation. He believed that Hong Kong could deal
with any problems even if the market is influenced by outside incidents. He
also said the government will do everything possible to help Hong Kong residents
in London. According to the latest figures provided by Hong Kong's
Immigration Department, it has received 56 requests for help from Hong Kong
residents in London after a series of explosions rocked the British
capital. All the requests are related to unsuccessful attempts to contact
their family members or friends in the UK. Contacts have been established with
21 of the Hong Kong residents concerned, and there is no information indicating
any casualties involving Hong Kong residents so far.
