Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi congratulated US President George
W. Bush on Wednesday on winning a second term in the White House.
Ciampi was in Italian northern city Trieste for the inauguration of a
photographic exhibition when he learned that Bush's challenger John Kerry had
admitted defeat, thereby ending doubts over the election result.
Asked by reporters for a reaction, Ciampi said only "Congratulations to Bush"
and declined to comment further.
The Italian center-right government, however, said openly it supported Bush
and has expressed satisfaction on his re-election.
During his visit to Moscow, Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi said on
Wednesday that he hoped Bush would be confirmed as US president because it would
be "simpler" for relations between Romeand Washington.
Referring to the friendly personal relationship he has developed with Bush,
Berlusconi said that it was always easier to reach agreements when there was
"esteem and friendship" between leaders.
Earlier on Wednesday, Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini stressed that
maintaining "close ties" with the United States was a priority for both Italy
and Europe.
Italy's center-left opposition appeared resigned to a victory for George
W.Bush in US elections but hoped for a softer line in foreign policy in the
president's second term.
