PNA mulls amendment to basic law
8/11/2004 21:43
Well-informed Palestinian sources said Monday that the Palestinian
National Authority (PNA) was mulling amendments to the basic law charter.
The sources said the amendments would allow PNA's leadership to be handed
over to former prime minister Mahmoud Abbas instead of the Palestinian
Legislative Council (PLC) chief Rawhi Fatouh.
Under the basic law, PNA's leadership would move to Fatouh in case of
Arafat's death or incapability for 60 days, after which presidential elections
would take place.
The sources said political and parliamentary officials
were deliberating on the issue.
