Abbas chosen as Fatah candidate for presidential elections

Palestine Liberation Organization leader Mahmud Abbas was chosen by the
dominant Fatah faction as its candidate for the presidential elections following
the death of the long-time Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, said a senior
official Sunday.
The elections, which was scheduled for Jan. 9, 2005, have become a hope of
the Palestinians to bring a smooth transition of power.
