Massive tidal waves smashed coastal areas in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Malaysia, the Maldives and Bangladesh, leaving tens of thousands of people dead and millions of others displaced.

Tens of thousands fled the coasts for higher ground, fearing aftershocks and further flood surges.
