South Korean Foreign Ministry on Monday confirmed one South Korean people was
killed in Thailand from the strong tsunamis, one woman missing and 18 others out
of contact as of late Monday afternoon.
Coincided with earlier media report, the ministry's spokesman Lee Kyu-hyung
said the dead is a 33-year-old South Korean resident in Malaysia named Lim
Wu-jeong. He and his Malaysian wife were both killed in Phuket Island in
Thailand when the strong tidal wave hit the island on early last Sunday.
A 75-year-old South Korean woman, identified only by her familyname Bae, has
been missing from Phuket since early last Sunday when tidal waves swept her
away.
Moreover, Lee added at least 14 South Korean visitors were out of contact on
the southern Thai resorts of Phuket Island, Phi Phi Island and Phang Nga Bay.
In addition, the government has lost contact with three South Korean business
people in Indonesia's northern Sumatra and one South Korean resident in
Maldives, Lee said, adding the number of injured South Koreans totaled nine as
of Monday afternoon.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry announced that the South Korean government
will send 600,000 US dollars in emergency aid to victims in the affected
southern Asian countries.
Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India will receive 150,000 dollars each, while
Thailand and three other countries will be given 50,000 dollars each.
Earlier in the day, South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and Foreign Minister
Ban Ki-moon both sent consolation messages to their counterparts in the southern
Asian countries.
