The death toll from the tidal waves in Thailand has risen to 918 and the number of the injuries to almost 7,400, according to the Thai Interior Ministry on Tuesday.
"As of 9:00 p.m. Monday the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported the loss of 918 lives and 7,396 injured in six provinces," the ministry said in a statement.
The minister said Monday that nearly 1,200 people were missing after Sunday's tsunamis triggered by the biggest earthquake in 40 years near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Many of the dead and missing were foreign tourists spending their Christmas vacation in Thailand's southwestern coast that is famous for idyllic scenery.
