Tsunami death toll rises to 63 in Malaysia

The death toll of Sunday's tsunami tidal wave which hit west coastlines of
Malaysia has risen to 63 at noon Tuesday, the Malaysian Control Center (MCC) of
the police headquarters said. A MCC spokesman said the tragedy also resulted
in 183 people being injured and 26 others were reported as still missing as of
Tuesday. "Penang recorded 49 deaths, while there were 10 fatalities in Kedah,
three in Perak and one in Selangor," he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur. The
tsunami, triggered by a massive earthquake in Indian Ocean near Indonesian
island of Sumatra Sunday, struck several states on the country's west coast and
Penang and Kedah states were the worst hit. Of the total number of people
injured, 108 cases were reported in Penang, 72 in Kedah and three in Perak. No
injuries were reported in Selangor, according to the spokesman. The search
teams were still continuing operations to look for 26 victims who were still
missing. Twenty-two of the missing victims were reported in Penang, three in
Kedah and one in Perak. Those injured comprise 108 in Penang, 72 in Kedah and
three in Perak. The Malaysian Armed Forces have deployed two Nuri
helicopters, 59 assault boats, 21 land vehicles and over 120 personnel to help
the search and rescue operation for the tsunami victims.
