In response to the Asia earthquake and tidal waves catastrophe, different
circles in Hong Kong have been raising fund to assist the victims. Hong Kong
Hutchison Whampoa Limited (HWL) and Li Ka Shing Foundation announced in Hong
Kong Tuesday that they would in total donate 24 million HK dollars towards the
relief of victims and rebuilding of affected areas. "We hope our effort will
help case some suffering. We also hope that Hong Kong people will express their
concern by contributing in whatever way they could to assist victims and the
repair of damages," said Li Ka-shing, Chairman of the HWL. Low temperature
has been persisted throughout the day with strong wind striking the street, but
none of these prevented people to show their concern about the condition of the
disaster. On a bustling street of Causeway Bay, there were people continually
donating money at the fundraising booth set up by the Democratic Alliance for
Betterment (DAB) of Hong Kong, a local party. Tin Chi-kin of the DAB said
there would be more booths set up in crowd districts Wednesday in order to
appeal for more fund, which would be sent to the Hong Kong Red Cross to help
relieve people in the disaster. The Hong Kong Red Cross has launched appeal
for victims of the disaster on Dec. 27 and about 20 million Hong Kong dollars of
fund has collected from the Hong Kong public so far. Donors included the
Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited who promised to give out
US$one million and the Hong Kong Jockey Club who is donating US$250,000
etc. This is the strongest earthquake in 40 years caused massive tidal waves,
causing a huge number of deaths, injuries. The International Red Cross has been
working in the affected areas including India, Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka
for the relief of the disaster.
