Combat against the Tsunami aftermath in Sri Lanka continued Tuesday when
relief items are sending to the worst-hit northern and eastern parts. A press
release issued by the president office said the Rehabilitation Ministry has sent
several loads of tents and bottled drinking water to the affected
areas. University students, civilians, military and police personnel have
queued up in the battered areas to donate blood since Sunday, when a powerful
earthquake in Indonesia triggered huge tidal waves in a number of Asian
nations. International and local volunteer groups in Sri Lanka have been
working with the government and the rebel group of the Liberation Tigers of
Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to distribute relief supplies to the disaster-rattled
northern areas. Drinking water, medicine and blood have become urgent
requirements in the areas, said the release. It has been estimated that over
350,000 persons need assistance and food for at least next 15 days, it
said. President Chandrika Kumaratunga has appointed a District Disaster
Management Authority (DDMA) for each affected district to lead the relief
campaign. Two special bank accounts were opened for the donation of fund.
